Here is the Artist of the Week! Posted on Wednesdays as something to get you through the rest of the week~
This week’s artist is…
Born May 10, 1979, Hyori is a solo artist under Mnet Media.
She started out in the group Fin.K.L. in 1998. As the oldest in the group, she became the leader. Though Fin.K.L. never officially disbanded, at the end of 2003, she made her debut as a solo artist.
As a solo artist, her concept is confident and sexy. She won a bunch of awards and her solo music career continued to succeed over the years. I think one of the reasons she’s so popular is because, while she can be really sexy, she’s also really down-to-earth and real. For example, a screenshot showing her “love handles” while she was sitting down on a TV show recently caused a ruckus. Her reaction to it was to laugh it off and remind people that that’s what usually happens with age.
She has worked with some of the guys in Big Bang… most memorably, TOP kissed her as part of one of his live stage performances.
Hyori attempted acting in a lead role for a drama, (Three Leaf Clover), but the ratings stayed pretty low throughout the broadcasting. She tried out acting again in “If In Love… Like Them”, which was a mini drama. It did well, but since it violated advertising guidelines, it’s forbidden from ever airing again in Korea. Since then, she’s hosted quite a few TV shows.
There were a few controversies involving her, but because she’s well-established in the music industry, it didn’t hurt her career. A few of her songs were plagiarisms of other songs. However, since Hyori herself didn’t produce her own music, the person she bought the songs from got the punishment. There was also a controversy involving her and Rain. On a radio show he implied that they had slept together, which she denies. Recently, she still expressed confusion over how people took that supposed radio joke seriously.
She’ll always be one of my favorite entertainers.
