Bad Girls: Taiwanese Movie Review

Bad Girls

Taiwanese Movie

My Score: 7.5/10

Director: Seven Wong

Cast: Ella Chen Mike He

Genre: Comedy/Romance

Summary: Tough girl, Dan, cares nothing for boys. She’s more likely to beat them up for bullying girls than to date one.

Things change when she meets movie star, Justin. Because of certain circumstances, he gets her to be the female lead in his new film.
Will they fall in love while acting together?

Review: Right away the beginning is set up as a comedy. It has some strange visuals that seem to be common in comedy films from Taiwan or China. You know, exaggerated and somewhat cartoon-like.
However, it was done fairly well, compared to others, and it came off as fun. Plus, it’s always entertaining to see a cute little girl beating people up with some awesome martial arts moves!

Ella Chen was so pretty here, though her facial expressions were often really funny. She plays a violent tomboy who’s always picking on her friends and beating boys up.
Usually really violent and carefree characters can get annoying, however, I just found it funny in this movie.

Mike He played a sweet and crafty movie star. I know a lot of sites are describing his character as cocky, but his character never really seemed that way to me. I don’t think he was even supposed to be the typical arrogant star in this movie. There was a brief misunderstanding when the girls assumed he was that way, but it didn’t last long enough to be put in the movie description, haha.
I liked how his character really understood how to deal with Dan, Ella’s character. It was so cute.

There was a strange music scene where Dan started singing, but I love Ella’s voice enough where I actually welcomed it. Other people might find it out of place or strange, though.

Overall, the movie was light and fast-paced. There was some conflict near the end, but it didn’t last long and it wasn’t heavy. I feel the movie was mostly a simple comedy… which is, there was romance, but there wasn’t enough development in that department to make an impact on the viewers.
Anyway, some of the things in it were so goofy, I couldn’t help but laugh… which was their intention of course. I enjoyed it.

Hmmm, but I’m not sure if the movie title was fitting. Sure, Dan fought and was “bad”, but her friends weren’t. They just seemed like normal friends who hung out with her.

It ended romantically and then had a little credit bonus that was pretty cute as well.

If you’re in the mood for some light, feel-good, amusing entertainment, then this is probably the film for you.
