Artist of the Week: Rain

Here is the Artist of the Week! Posted on Wednesdays as something to get you through the rest of the week~

This week’s artist is…

His name is actually “Bi”, but since that’s just the Korean word for “rain”, most English-speaking people refer to him as “Rain” instead.

Rain is a super famous person in Korea… and from what I know, all of Asia in general. He started out in JYP Entertainment, but eventually moved on to create his own company, J. Tune Entertainment. Actually, before he was recruited into JYP, he was fairly shy and introverted. Not only that, but he was always being rejected from auditions because the companies didn’t think he looked good enough.

Oh yeah, he’s definitely not good-looking enough… /sarcasm.

Not only is he popular for his music and dancing, but he has been in many successful dramas and movies like Full House. He’s also the first Korean to win an MTV award by acting in the American movies Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin.

I’m pretty sure his acting in Full House is what contributed to his huge success in Asia, since that drama was broadcasted in over 15 different countries, had a popular actress in it, and was a well-written romantic comedy.

Rain being hard-core in Ninja Assassin.

Rain has had his share of controversies, as many famous people do. In 2007, Rain Corporation tried to sue him for using the name “Rain” while in the United States, since they also had a group of the same name. However, the case was dropped when the court decided the company wouldn’t lose anything by having the same name.

There were also some concert and money problems that were taken to court by a former manager, however that case was also dropped on the grounds of poor concert planning by all involved.

Currently, Rain is serving in the military for his mandatory 2 years of service (which is required by all Korean men). He will be back July 2013.
