Kamikaze Girls Japanese Movie Review

Kamikaze Girls Movie

My Score: 8.5/10

★★★★☆

Director: Tetsuya Nakashima

Cast: Kyoko Fukada Anna Tsuchiya

Genre: Comedy/Friendship/Coming-of-Age

Summary:  Two very different girls become friends. One is obsessed with Lolita fashion and lifestyle and the other is a tough Yanki gangster.

Review: This is a strange movie, but not so strange that you have no idea what’s going on. It’s a comedy and I would say it can be kind of anime-like at times. That is, the comedy comes from strange random things and there are scenes that are not very realistic. It follows a pretty consistent story-line with some flashbacks thrown in once in awhile. It sort of follows a narrative style most of the time, but that’s understandable since it’s based after a book. I should also mention that the film is visually bright and colorful.

I liked the story. It really captures many things about being a girl. I could understand and relate to a lot of things in this movie… for example, the way girls look for a style to define themselves with.

The relationship between the two girls is really great. It’s so funny to see how they interact with each other. The acting was really good for a comedy. I loved the different expressions Anna Tsuchiya made.

I highly recommend this movie. It’s just so funny and entertaining!

My Score: 8.5/10
