Audition Japanese Movie Review

Audition Movie

My Score: 5.5/10

★★★☆☆

Director: Takashi Miike

Cast: Ryo Ishibashi Eihi Shiina Tetsu Sawaki Jun Kunimura

Genre: Thriller/Cult Classic

Summary: Seven years after his wife died, Shigeharu decides he wants to re-marry. His movie producer friend thinks up a plan… Shigeharu can find his new wife through an “audition”. They’ll pretend they’re going to make a movie, but in reality, the woman auditioning for the lead role will really be auditioning to be Shigeharu’s wife!

After looking through the applicant papers, Shigeharu becomes obsessed with one of them. However, his friend senses that something is not quite right about the girl….

Review: This is advertised as “horror”, but I didn’t really think it was. I thought maybe it would be better to classify it as a thriller, but there’s not enough there to name it either of those without feeling a bit disappointed. The first half of the movie is just a normal life thing. If we didn’t know any better from the cover, we might even think it’s just another romance. (I think that was the plan… to trick people into watching a horror movie. However, that only works at the first theater showing. There’s too many spoilers to warn people so it didn’t work.)

Around the middle, it gets a bit surreal. In the last quarter of the movie, it gets creepy. Suddenly it’s a thriller and then it’s over just as suddenly.

It was an okay movie, but probably not something I’d watch again. The only thing I really liked about the movie was the man’s adorable son, haha.

Warning: There is some very brief nudity, but mostly violence.

My Score: 6.5/10
