Here is the Artist of the Week! Posted on Wednesdays as something to get you through the rest of the week~
This week’s artist is…
Jang Woo Hyuk
Born: May 8, 1978
Dance Styles: Waving, Popping, Strobing, Animation, Body Shakes, Tutting
Jang Woo Hyuk debuted through the group H.O.T. as the rapper.
His dance skills were noticed when the group performed their hit “Candy”. With that, he got his nickname “Hammer Boy” when he did his locking dance during the song.
When H.O.T. disbanded, he was one of three that created the group JTL. JTL went through some hardships as Lee Soo Man of SM Entertainment blocked their promotions because he was mad they left his company, (much like JYJ and DBSK).
JTL disbanded in 2003, and Jang Woo Hyuk went off to start a dance company, Newest Entertainment.
He released a solo album in 2005, No More Drama, but before he did, he trained in dance for 10 months. He released another album in 2006 called My Way. After his second concert to promote My Way, it was discovered that he had jaw arthritis so all other promotions for that album were canceled so he could get medical attention.
His mandatory military service had a bit of controversy because of that. He entered in the military in April 2007, but was sent back after his army training because of his jaw. Many people misunderstood and thought he was somehow getting out of his military duties. However, after 2 big surgeries within 3 months, he entered the military again in November 2007. Though, this time he had to be in the 4th level instead of 3rd, (which means he had a desk job).
Jang Woo Hyuk’s military service was over in December 2009.
In 2010 he decided to sing in China instead of Korea. Before leaving for the military, he was very popular in Taiwan and China and did some promotions over there (though no concerts), so it wasn’t a surprising move.
I Am The Future, his 3rd album, was released in 2011 in Korea. This one had a more futuristic sound than the R&B rap-style he used in his previous two albums.
A mini album was released in November 2011 called Back to the Memories. This one was a bit more reminiscent to his pre-military music.
Very soon after that, he got a part in the Chinese drama, ‘My Sileok Girlfriend/My Forgetful Girlfriend’, which is a romantic comedy about a girl who lost her memory. He’ll be co-starring with Korean actress Nam Gyuri. The movie is going to be released mid-2012.
