Mary Stayed Out All Night/Marry Me Mary
My Score: 7.5/10
Summary: Mae Ri really has a rough life. Her father is in debt and the loan sharks are always after her. She’s being kicked out of her apartment… and her father is on the run. She happens to meet Kang Moo Kyul, a singer in a band and they get along really well.
Suddenly, a friend of her father shows up. He’s rich and offers to help pay off the debts. The catch is, Mae Ri has to marry his son, Byun Jung In. To get out of this, Mae Ri convinces Kang Moo Kyul to pretend to be her husband. Unfortunately her plan backfires when her dad announces a 100-day “trial” where she has to spend time with each guy and then decide who to be with at the end.
Review: This was based after the webcomic “Maerineun Uibakjoong” by Won Su-Yeon… (who also wrote Full House)… but the characters and general feeling of the comic are way different than the drama.
Anyway, this was a pretty good drama. The story-line was interesting. There are so many “rich-guy-poor-girl” dramas out there that it was nice to have a “poor-guy-poor-girl” cast for a change… even if it creates some terrible adult characters, (the parents were basically losers).
Even though this drama is set up as a love-triangle, it really doesn’t feel like one until the end.
Towards the end, it gets a different feel. Probably because the lower ratings caused the producers to hire a different writer around that time. It starts being more comedic and light.
I’m not sure why the ratings were bad enough for them to do that though… the drama wasn’t outright bad. It wasn’t amazing, but it certainly wasn’t a waste of time to watch.
Things I Didn’t Like: Someone gets drunk in almost every episode. Yeah, I know there’s always drinking in dramas… but this was too much. It felt like everyone was an alcoholic.
It felt a little muddled or messy towards the middle… and I hated the adult characters.
My Score: 7.5/10
